Anderson Silva is ‘too big’ for Georges St. Pierre

Friday, August 28th, 2009

gspSilvaDana White has put a stop, at least for now, on a potential fight between middleweight Anderson Silva and welterweight champion Georges St. Pierre.
“I think he’s too big for Georges. Forrest Griffin is huge and at the weigh-ins, when we squared them off, he was as big as Forrest at 205. The guy is unbelievable….

Silva will probably defend his title against Dan Henderson or the winner of the UFC 102 fight between Nate Marquardt and Demain Maia. Another name thrown out there is Randy Couture, depending on the outcome of his fight at UFC 102.

The Underdog response to criticism from fans and the media

randy_couture1“Criticism from fans and the media is certainly something you have to deal with as a fighter but you have to learn to just let it roll off of you. It doesn’t matter what anybody else thinks; it’s what you believe in your heart that’s most important. I’ve certainly been dealing with those types of comments for most of my career,” Couture explains. “With my age, everyone is wondering when the other shoe is going to drop and when enough is enough. They want to scrutinize and question every time I compete whether I win or lose. Unfortunately fans and the media are fickle and you’re only as good as your last victory in their eyes. What they don’t think about is that what makes our sport special in comparison to other professional sports is that it’s a rarity to see a fighter go undefeated; every top level fighter loses at some point.”

I remember watching Couture vs Sylvia at UFC 68. I thought that Couture didn’t have a chance, but he pulled it off and came out with a victory. I am very excited to see him fight tomorrow night.

I’m kind of like the blue-collar UFC fighter.

keith-jardineKeith Jardine thinks the UFC may not want him to be a champion.
“There’s a big difference between a win and a loss in the UFC. I’m making a comfortable living right now, but I’m definitely fighting for my livelihood…. I’m kind of like the blue-collar UFC fighter. I’m working my way in through the back door. I haven’t been fed any (soft) opponents. I didn’t win the reality show. I’m just making my own way. I haven’t been mass marketed to anybody. That’s the thing. The marketing machine hasn’t really gotten behind me. I’m fine with it, but I just think that the Forrest Griffins and those guys, they’d rather have those guys have the title than me. They kind of let me go my own way a bit because I’m not out there craving attention and I’m not out there hamming it up for the fans. I’m not being like Brock Lesnar after the fight (at UFC 100). That was embarrassing. I’m not that guy. I never will be. I’ll always be humble and be mean when it counts. I come from a real hard-working background and I don’t think my Dad would think very well of me if I were out there making an ass of myself. I’m just going to be myself and hopefully people will appreciate that. When I have the title, hopefully I will have a lot of fans because of the way I am.”

I love Jardine and I think he is great for the sport. This just made Jardine one of my favorite fighters. I love how he does not crave all the media, and he doesn’t like anything given to him without a fight.
